My Rails World experience and some updates

Hey there,

I promised more regular updates, so here I come again!

I went to Rails World in Austin, Texas and it was an amazing experience. This was my first time in the US and I loved it. The conference was great, as usual I spent most of my time on the hallway track and I won a https://usetrmnl.com/ device thanks to AppSignal!

You probably heard about the DHH opening keynote, which was quite surprising in some sense. One thing is for sure, we have no idea what the future holds, if someone would've told me a year ago how much I will use LLMs for my daily work, I would've not believed it. But I think we should still have the LLM write code we can understand even if that code will run slower than alternatives. Matz(the creator of Ruby) experiments with a Ruby to C to binary compiler to Spinel and the promise of the project is to be able to write Ruby code, that runs fast. There are some caveats though, because it doesn't work with Rails out of the box. But thankfully, Sam Ruby created a project called Roundhouse to work on that problem. It is still in a very early stage, but he runs a Campfire instance that is compiled from the Ruby source with Spinel to an executable binary. I think these projects might be the answer to make Rails more performant should you need, although I don't think Rails is slow at all. Anyways, I highly recommend to checkout these 2 projects, I contributed some security fixes to both and keep doing that.

In other news, I met Joel Gaff in person for the first time at Rails World, and at the after-party, after a few drinks we were chatting about how I lived at this isolated place, and usually only talk tech at conferences, then I mentioned that I am thinking about starting a podcast, so I would talk tech weekly with some people. And Joel said "Let's go for it, I will be your co-host!". We shook hands, followed up and started The Pingback Podcast! You can listen to the first episode on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxwrvN0Hyxw or in your favorite podcast app. We are planning to release a new episode every Saturday and we will have some interesting guest on in future episodes.

And as a personal update, I am building another cabin on our land. We just finished the structure and now comes the more time consuming finalizing part.

And that's it from me. Feel free to hit reply and tell me how things are going on your side!

Thanks,

Greg
